Booking my first appointment

When we receive a referral or phone call from a new client, we will speak with you personally to make sure we have all the important and relevant information from you and to help determine how urgently you might need to be seen.

We will provide you with all the information you need to help you make the decision to go ahead with an appointment, including information about our psychologists, the fees, where we are, and what to bring with you.  Our Practice Administrators will expertly guide you through this process and happily answer any questions you might have.

What to expect in my first appointment?

We will talk about how your referral came about, any experience you might have had with therapy and/or counselling in the past and what was helpful or not helpful. We will explore what you want to get out of seeing us and how we can be most helpful to you. We will talk about your current concerns and how you usually deal with issues, problems, difficulties. This gives us a good idea of strengths and skills you already have. It also helps us to identify what interventions, strategies and skills might best match your needs.

We will ask lots of questions as we talk together to ensure that you feel heard and understood.

We might provide you with information that could be both relevant and useful to the concerns you currently have, that will help you understand your situation more, if this seems like it would be useful. We might ask you to notice certain things, to make note of or record particular things, as this helps us with information that we could use together to bring about the changes you want.

We will ask you questions about how you felt about this first session, what was helpful or unhelpful, and check that we talked about the things you wanted to talk about. This helps us to make sure we’ve heard and understood you, that you feel comfortable working with us, and that we both understand the outcome we’re working toward.

Follow Up Appointments

Appointments are scheduled at set times and sessions usually last 50-60minutes. Most people find that this is long enough. If it seems like more time is required, please discuss this with the psychologist. When we make an initial appointment with you we also reserve up to four more appointments for you. This ensures that you have follow-up appointments already in the diary. It can be reassuring to know that your Psychologist is committed to seeing you again.

In order that people get the most out of their scheduled time, we cannot squeeze in extra sessions, or double book appointments. Sometimes, you may need to wait to get an appointment, but every effort will be made to get you an appointment as soon as possible. And this is why we reserve appointments for you. This ensures that you will always have a time available for you to see your Psychologist.

Please be on time for your appointment as this ensures that you get the most out of your session and that others are not left waiting for theirs.

Please turn off mobile phones when you arrive.
